Understanding Baldness

The thought of being bald bothers millions of people around the world everyday. Many of us wonder "if our parents are bald will we be bald?" The truth of the matter is... there is a good chance. However before you get all worked up lets review what "going bald" really means.

On an average adults lose anywhere from 50-100 strands of hair for every 100,000 per day. We suffer from natural hair loss daily. The strands that come off when you brush your hair are normal. There are two parts of hair:

The Follicle:
The follicle is located inside your scalp. It helps protect your strands of hair. The follicle is living and is in a state of growth all the time.

The Hair Shaft:
The hair shaft is the visible piece of hair that is above the scalp. The strand (or hair shaft) is nothing but dead cells. The shaft will not regenerate or regrow.

Hair has two phases it goes through in its life cycle. One stage is called the Growth stage or(Anagen)Phase. This phase generally lasts for 4-7 years. The second phase is the resting stage or (Telogen) phase were it then dies falling out of the scalp. Your hair is in a constant state of cycle. 85% of your hair is at the Anagen phase. While the other 15% is at the Telogen phase.

One of the most common forms of hair loss is male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness. Which is genetic but it can be treated. Male and female pattern baldness can show between the ages of 20-45 starting out thinning hair density. Hair loss in balding men occurs when the follicles are effected by the hormones in the body. Most people believe that chemicals or lotions can effect hair loss. However that is a myth. The follicles are located inside the scalp. They are not effected by what happens on the surface of the scalp.

The second most common form of hair loss is Diffuse Hair loss. This is when sudden large clumps of hair fall out with no hair regrowth.

A Few Hair Loss Causes:
- Pregnancy
- After child birth
- Trauma
- Cancer Treatments

Understanding that Male Pattern Baldness also known as (Androgenic Alopecia) happens to both man and women is important. You should also understand that just because it has started doesn't mean you will wakeup bald. Male pattern hair loss often takes many years. It is a slow and gradual process causing patches around the scalp. Although there are several cultures that weren't effected by male pattern baldness. Japanese cultures before world war 11 or in some western civilizations in less modern times were not effected. They have found that there is a correlation to some lifestyles and hair baldness.

Other Causes of Hair loss:
Stress related Hair loss: is a common form of hair loss. Stress effects the body in all areas and is also the leading cause of heart attacks in the U.S. Stress increases your hormones and increases the level of DHT in your body. Many think this is a contributer to hair loss.

Alopecia Totalis: Is a total loss of hair and is a rare condition. Alopecia Totalis is an autoimmune disease. There are treatments for this conditions but no cures to this date.

Treatment for Baldness:
There are several treatments for baldness. It must be said that there is no one baldness cure. Many people can find refuge at hair clinics and several treatments are available. Many times they can find treatments to stop balding for several years or give the patient healthier hair.

One of the most common treatments for treating hair loss is surgical hair restoration. This involves hair transplants and has side effects. It can have some scabbing, pain, or discomfort for up to a week after the procedure. There are other hair loss solutions such as hair loss vitamins, Avodart hair loss treatment or beta hydroxy acid used in anti aging wrinkle creams. Avodart can have side effects like hair loss or impotence. Sometimes it causes breast enlargement. If you are pregnant it is wise to tell your physician before using it as a women hair loss treatment.

There are several treatments for baldness such as proscar which is not FDA approved but giving many people relief. Some physicians are not giving prescriptions for this drug yet as a hair loss remedies since it is still not FDA approved. Also other hair loss products like Revivogen hair loss or Provillus hair loss treatment are essentially a vitamin are available to you as a balding treatment. Provillus is a vitamin which blocks the DHT in your body preventing baldness. It is also FDA approved. Another very effective hair loss product is topical Minoxidil which is a solution that is prepared with either 2% or 5 % minoxidil in propylene glycol. It is simply applied to the scalp daily. Topical Minoxidil is also FDA approved and many people are using the minoxidil solution to help them with their baldness.

Laser Treatments for hair loss are another way that many hair clinics are treating hair loss. Laser treatments don't require surgery and are proven to help regain hair after hair loss or baldness. Laser treatments block the DHT that has been known to cause male baldness and womens hair loss. In baldness news it is said that laser surgery is on the rise. Although there is no absolute cure for baldness researchers claim to be very close.
